How To Hire A Web Content Writer

June 27, 2020 By Daniel Stouffer

Now more than ever there are all sorts of people on the internet offering their services as so-called web content writers.  With the sheer amount of options, it can be really tricky to figure out who is going to be worth your time and who isn’t.

Hiring the right copywriter is important

The content on your website is going to be what customers use to tell whether you are worth their time or not.  Well-written content can show that you are friendly, professional and ready to serve them are worth their weight in gold.

However, poorly written content will not only drive those customers away, it may even hurt your company’s reputation overall.  Then there’s the fact that it will be a waste of your money since you’ll have to get it all redone by a legitimate web content writer.

It’s hard to know what to look for in a content writer unless you are used to searching for writers and can sniff out the bad ones from the good ones, it seems impossible, but all you have to do is take a moment to understand what to look for in a content writer.

Test your web content writer before you hire them

When interviewing, you’ll want to focus on some key questions:

  1. What do you know about our company?

When a writer is contacted for an interview, they — just like any other kind of interviewee — should check you out to see what you’re about and whether or not they’re a good match for you.  If you ask this question and they give some sort of non-committal answer, it’s not a good sign.

  1. Do you have a portfolio of past examples?

If the content writer says “no”, it’s something to consider as potential flag.  When looking at the portfolio they provide, don’t look only for industry-specific posts.  Take in their work on a more general level: are they able to organize their thoughts?  Is their writing comfortable to read?

  1. What rate do you charge, and what does that include or exclude?

The finances often are tricky to work out in the beginning, but this is a key part to sort out early in hiring content writers, as there may be some that have priced themselves out of your range.

  1. Do you have any customer testimonials?

Getting a feel for how other customers have liked or disliked the writer in the past can help be part of the decision too.

Bring the right content writer on board

By using these questions, amongst others you may find, you’ll weed out the bad ones from the good ones.  Not only is this going to profitable for your business website and potential customer interest, the writer is going to enjoy a fruitful and compatible professional relationship as well!
